The Ethiopian variety grows wild in some areas of western Ethiopia. The main area of cultivation is in the Lake Tana and eastern Ethiopia.

In Ethiopian herbal medicine cardamom can also be used for a laxative. Cardamon is also one of the main spices in the berbere blend.
